Self Storage Association Asia Statement on

Storage and Disposal of Found Human Remains

June 3, 2025

The Self Storage Association Asia (SSAA) is committed to encouraging all members to maintain the highest standards in self storage and to operate legally compliant businesses.

A recent social media post by a non-member company describes improper disposal of found, cremated human remains (aka cremains).
The SSAA would like to clarify matters for the general public and the media as follows:

  1. Self storage operators in Hong Kong must make it clear to current and potential customers that the storage of human remains in any form in self storage premises is forbidden by law.

  2. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department provides guidance on the disposal of cremated human remains (‘cremains’) as required by law here:

    https://www.fehd.gov.hk/english/cc/cremated_ashes.html

Simply put, under no circumstances should customers of self storage store cremains in self storage units.

The SSAA provides members with authorised posters that include a wide range of goods that are not allowed in self storage premises. Members prominently display these posters at the entrance and at highly visible positions in their premises.

The SSAA also provides standard contracts for members that include a provision that customers agree not to store forbidden goods.

Forbidden goods include, but are not limited to, food and beverage, illegal goods, hazardous chemicals, waste (i.e. garbage, rubbish of any description), batteries, flammable liquids, toxic chemicals, weapons and more.

SSAA members receive an updated annual sticker indicating their membership status that they normally post at their entrances. Concerned consumers can check the SSAA website to see who our members are in good standing here:

If consumers have any questions, they can contact the SSAA at info@selfstorageasia.org regarding a company’s member status or if they have questions about storing goods in Hong Kong.
